Why Are Chauffeurs Sometimes Called ‘James’?

This expression has been around for quite a while, and it's somewhat difficult to trace these types of sayings' origins.  While some believe it has existed since the 1840s, it seems to have gained much of its popularity from a 1934 Fred Hillebrand song:
