The City of Oneonta Police and Fire Departments today received information from the City of Oneonta Court regarding a suspicious substance contained within an envelope addressed to the court.

The suspicious substance was in the form of a powder and upon opening the envelope a small amount was dispersed within the court offices. The court was then sealed off and evacuated per protocol.

Personnel who were exposed to the substance have been treated. There have been no reported injuries or illness.

UPDATE: Police report that the investigation has been concluded through a multi-agency effort. The substance was determined to be nonhazardous and posed no threat to anyone who came in contact with it. 

The joint investigation included members of the Oneonta City Police Department, Oneonta Fire Department, New York State Court Officers, and US Postal Inspectors.

The court and building have been re-opened for business.
