Throughout this entire month, hundreds of pinwheels are being displayed in front yards, at area churches, community organizations, and at all 30 fire stations across Otsego County.

The pinwheels are part of a statewide effort to bring awareness of child abuse and neglect during Child Abuse Prevention Month.

“Pinwheels for Prevention” is based on the principle that the community must do more than respond to cases of abuse through prosecution and intervention; but, provide policies and programs that engage the community, focus on child development, and create conditions that allow parents to reach their full potential.

As the new symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention, the pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve. The Building Healthy Families program at Opportunities for Otsego, the Otsego County Child Advocacy Center and the Otsego Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect are distributing pinwheels county-wide and are asking residents to become a part of the effort by helping to distribute pinwheels or by hosting a pinwheel garden.
