Lupe Fiasco’s Anti-Voting Stance Causes Debate on Twitter
Lupe Fiasco has always been outspoken about the America's political system and President Obama's overall leadership. So as Americans try to figure out who to vote for in the upcoming presidential elections, the Chicago rhyme-slinger has stated that he's not planning to vote on Nov. 6.
In past interviews, Fiasco has always voiced his displeasure in the U.S. voting system, which is why he doesn't participate in government elections. Recently, the rapper's non-voting stance has drawn criticisms from both comedian D.L. Hughley and political pundit Roland S. Martin.
Hughley said Fiasco is "dumb" for not exercising his right to vote and could influence others to do the same as well. “Young black men are going to listen to him," he told a Connecticut radio station. "They are the ones who have decisions made for them, [decisions] that they are not even involved in, which is silly to me."
"There are more black men in prison then there were ever slaves. And it's silly to me that people don't want to have a hand in their future," he adds.
Meanwhile, Martin went on Twitter to chime in on Fiasco's decision to not vote in the upcoming elections. "I just read some comments about voting and @lupefiasco that are some of the most ignorant, false stuff someone can say," he tweeted. In response, the 'Kick, Push' rapper wrote, "Just lettin you 'Lupe Dumb Cuz He Don't Vote' crowd know that if y'all don't #LeeMeAlone my n---as #YallGoneGetThisWork #FL2Sept25." He then added, "Yo @rolandsmartin obama ain't gone lose cuz of me and my raps dawg...Now I'm begging you bruh bruh."
Martin and Fiasco then engaged in a back-and-forth Twitter debate that lasted several hours, according to MTV News. In the end, no real resolution came out of it.
Afterward, Fiasco, who is dropping his new album 'Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1' on Sept. 25, offered these last parting tweets to his fans. He tweeted:
Oh hey guys make sure you register to vote and vote for who u think is best to help you live your life the way you want. I dont vote...
