The New York State Department of Health confirmed there are no positive cases of coronavirus in the state after samples taken from seven individuals came back negative. Three additional samples are still being tested. The Department of Health continues to closely monitor and continue preparations along with providing guidance to New York’s colleges and universities, many of which have international students from China, on how to identify the virus, update students and promote prevention measures.

The DOH is encouraging people to "take normal precautions against sickness, such as regular hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who are sick."

Symptoms of the novel coronavirus may include: cough, sore throat, and fever.

While there is currently no vaccine for this novel coronavirus, preventative actions can help stop the spread of this and other respiratory viruses, including:

- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The DOH recommends that individuals who may have traveled to areas of concern or have been in contact with somebody who has traveled to those areas and are experiencing symptoms of illness, should call ahead to their healthcare provider before presenting for treatment.
