One of the region’s most prominent energy families has committed $100,000 toward the construction of a new emergency department and walk in center at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Members of the Mirabito family presented a check to campaign leaders during a small ceremony at the family-owned energy holding company’s Binghamton headquarters earlier this week. The six-figure pledge is the latest commitment to the Norwich hospital’s capital campaign kicked off their capital campaign in August.

“Growing up, at every stage of our lives, it was instilled in us to work hard, be good to people and always, always give back,” said Joe Mirabito, Chairman and CEO of Mirabito Energy Products.

The chief executive’s grandfather, James Mirabito, founded the family business in Norwich in 1927 before expanding to Sidney. It now operates throughout much of New York and into Pennsylvania and New England. The company has a strong history of community support across its footprint, particularly to organizations that address the health care needs of vulnerable populations, such as children and people living with chronic illness.

“Giving back to incredible organizations doing important work in the communities we serve motivates us to work hard every day—and supporting the needs of this great community where my grandfather made his home and his vision for energy began, makes this donation extra special for us,” Mirabito said.

Campaign Chair Martin Dietrich thanked the Mirabito family for its commitment to the campaign, and their leadership in giving.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Mirabito family,” Dietrich said. “Their family of businesses plays an important role in our regional economy, fueling the lives and work of countless families and businesses. This generous commitment, which they’ve made on behalf of their employees and customers, will benefit our entire community.”

According to Dietrich, funds raised with the capital campaign will support construction of a new Emergency Room and Walk-In Center, as well as strategic investments in Diagnostic Imaging and infrastructure to support the growth of future services at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital. The work is part of the first phase of the hospital’s Chenango Medical Neighborhood Plan.

“This is the largest concentrated investment at Chenango Memorial in fifty years,” the campaign chair said. “The response we’ve received from area businesses, foundations and the community has been

tremendous. It’s a testament to both the generosity of this community and to the importance of the hospital to those who live and work in Chenango County.”

According to Dietrich, the hospital intends to solicit support for the 2019 Chenango Medical Neighborhood Capital Campaign through the end of the year.
