Like last year, I am once again dismayed to see the announcement from the City of Oneonta that they will be allowing a non-profit group to go door-to-door throughout the city to share information and get donations for their cause. See the press release below:

“Please be advised that the Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment will be conducting home-to-home canvass in the City of Oneonta between the hours of 4:00pm and 9:00pm Monday through Friday beginning in April and until June of 2016.  If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact the City of Oneonta Clerk’s office at (607) 432-6450.”

Here’s how I feel about this…The Citizen’s Campaign aside, unless it’s a neighborhood kid trying to sell something as a fundraising effort for school or another extracurricular activity, I don’t like solicitors coming to my house.  I find it invasive.  If I want to buy something or get more information about something, I go to the source.  I don’t want to be bothered at my house, especially between 7 and 9 p.m when I'm trying to relax and enjoy time with my family.

I do want to make it clear that The Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment isn’t trying to sell a product.  Their mission is to provide US citizens with tools and training for effecting political change in their community. They are a non-profit organization based out of New Jersey.  Plus, they typically ask for donations.  I think the group coming to Oneonta will be doing environmental advocacy, based on my past experiences with this organization.
