Smokin' Guns is a Western multiplayer shooting game. Players use pistols, shotguns, rifles, and other items to fight it out in western themed maps. It is open-source, meaning that anyone can download and play the full game for free.

Smokin' Guns is an incredibly fun game. I've played with plenty of people who agree that the simple graphics are easily ignored when you actually start playing. Playing Free-For-All matches is actually fun in this game, in contrast to most other multiplayer games where the only interesting matches are team deathmatch or some other game type.

Smokin' Guns has some other game types as well, including "Bank Robbery" matches in which one team (the "Outlaws") must blow open the bank and bring the gold back to the getaway location while the other team (the "Lawmen") try to prevent them from doing this.

There is an in-game currency per match, earned by getting kills, and spent on guns and equipment. There are pistols (which you can dual-wield), shotguns, rifles (including a one-shot sniper), dynamite, Molotov cocktails, and even a deployable Gatling gun.

Buying weapons and using the map to your advantage, while countering other players' choices, keeps the game very interesting -- we often play on one map for hours. You can deploy a Gatling gun on the back of the train, or buy a sniper and a scope and climb up into the church tower.

The interactivity of the maps makes these situation even more interesting -- by climbing the rope up the bell tower, the bell rings and everyone hears where you are. Players can jump off of the moving train onto the station, and jump back on the train as it has moved further on to quickly surprise players.

My favorite part of this game is the level at which the developers decided to create the game. They decided to include little details such as the bell ringing rather than just getting the game done as easily as possible.

Most popular, expensive games completely ignore details like this. In Smokin' Guns, if you fire 3 out of 6 shots and then reload, only 3 shots will be loaded. This goes for all the weapons of this game. There are secret areas to be found, destructible walls, and interactive maps. Even the keys move on the player-piano in one map.

There isn't just one death animation or simple rag-doll physics like most games. There is a variety of animations based on how the player was killed. When throwing dynamite, the player must light the dynamite, and the fuse burning down is visible.

The lack of players in this game comes from its age, poor graphics, and total lack of advertising. The only way to get more people in this game is by word of mouth. The best way to play this game is with a bunch of friends. Given that it is free, compatible with all operating systems and can run smoothly on most computers, that shouldn't be too hard to find people to play it with.
