Deposit Fire Department Giving Out Free Smoke Alarms

Volunteers and staff from the American Red Cross will join with members of the Deposit Fire Department to visit homes to install free smoke alarms and provide home fire prevention and safety information to residents. The community event is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 beginning at 10 a.m.
Participants will assemble at the Deposit Fire Department, and then go door-to-door in homes along Front and Second Streets.

As part of its Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross has been joining with community groups and fire departments nationwide to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them. The initiative is aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent over the next few years. The Red Cross is asking every household to take two simple steps: check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.

In the past twelve months, the Southern Tier Chapter installed more than 750 smoke alarms in Broome, Chenango, Tioga and and Tompkins Counties.
