In December 2016, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office launched a Random Acts of Kindness Holiday Initiative to expand our community relations program and allow the public to view law enforcement in a different light.  The Delaware County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association kicked off the campaign and several local businesses and vendors joined to make the program a huge success.  The program involved Deputies engaging in random acts of kindness while in the performance of their routine duties throughout the County.  Discretionary situations such as a broken tail light or other minor infraction would result in a presentation of a gift certificate instead of a ticket, all sponsored by the Deputies and local supporters.  Furthermore, Deputies were on the look-out for citizens engaged in positive activity within their communities and would recognize them as well.

To fund this initiative, the Delaware County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association (PBA) donated a sum of money to purchase gift cards and gift certificates from Delaware County businesses as well as also soliciting donations mainly in the form of gift cards and gift certificates from Delaware County citizens, organizations and businesses. Remarkably, over $1,200 in donations were received.

The program has been a huge success and has definitely caught people off guard, according to Delaware County Undersheriff Craig DuMond.  Undersheriff DuMond remarked, “This initiative supports our mission and demonstrates that law enforcement officers are of the community and for the community.  Sheriff Mills and I were happy to support this program to further promote our positive community relations with the public”.
