Nintendo’s Amiibo figures are looking to claim a percentage of the collectible game figure market currently cornered by Skylanders and Disney Infinity with interactive plastic versions of their most popular characters. An MCVUK report today announces that the figures are available for pre-order, and reveals their retail price point.

Retailer ShopTo has started taking pre-orders for Amiibo figures, which have no release date but are expected in the fourth quarter of 2014. ShopTo has priced the figures at £12.85, which translates to $21.89 in American money. The site has entries for Mario, Link, Peach, Kirby, Zelda, Pikachu, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Samus Aran, Animal Crossing Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Kid Icarus’ Pit, Fox McCloud, and Fire Emblem’s Marth. Strangely, the site lists separate entries for the Wii U and 3DS versions of the figures despite the fact that Amiibo figures will work on either platform.

For comparison, single figures from Skylanders: Swap Force and Disney Infinity 2.0 retail between $13.00 and $17.00, so Nintendo’s NFC figures may be a bit more expensive than their competitors. It’s possible, however, that American retailers will offer the figures at a more competitive price.

The Amiibo figures will certainly help the Wii U and 3DS provide a more interesting and personalized experience for gamers, but with the selection of characters available, we expect that collectors will also be snatching them up to get plastic versions of beloved Nintendo characters. The Fox McCloud figure, especially, should appeal to collectors who have had very few opportunities to own a 3-dimensional version of StarFox’s protagonist. Here’s hoping the second wave of Amiibo figures will feature a Little Mac figure, another classic character who has been woefully under-represented in toys.
