Two Oneonta residents who are concerned about the safety of children when in school have started a group called the Guardian Angel Project. Carrie Grace and Guy Weideman have made it their goal to ensure children are as safe as possible by lobbying for changes in the Oneonta City School District System.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher on Tuesday delivered her third annual State of the University Address. In the address the Chancellor Zimpher highlighted the value of a college degree and setting an ambitious agenda for the year ahead as SUNY aspires to be a national model for higher education in America.

The State Education Department had approved 656 school district teacher and principal evaluation plans or 95 percent of the school districts in the state. All school districts in Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Otsego County have been approved.

Consolidating some of the state's nearly 700 school districts has long been touted as a way to save money on administrative overhead. Fostering more consolidations was one of the preliminary recommendations released recently by the governor's Education Reform Commission. In fact, the reform commission noted that more than half the state's school districts have fewer than 2,000 students.
