ONEONTA, N.Y. — More than 200 SUNY Oneonta freshmen have signed up to spend their first full day in Oneonta volunteering at local nonprofit organizations.

SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC) will host its sixth annual Freshman Service Day today.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. students will volunteer at 20 sites in and around Oneonta performing activities ranging from painting and yard work to helping elementary school teachers organize their classrooms.

A total of 27 upperclassmen and two faculty members will serve as team leaders. Volunteers will gather at the Goodrich Theater before heading off, via Oneonta Public Transit bus service, to their work sites, which include: Hampshire House Home for the Elderly, Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad depot, Milford Historical Society, Oneonta Historical Society, Bugbee Children’s Center, Plains at Parrish Homestead, Greater Plains Elementary School, Springbrook, YMCA Child Enrichment Program, CANO Art Gallery, Head Start and Opportunities for Otsego, Otsego County Conservation Association, Salvation Army Church, Oneonta Nursery School, Riverside Elementary School, Friends of Recovery, College Camp, Lord’s Table, Calvary Hill retreat center and Oneonta Community Christian School.

Working collaboratively with local nonprofits, CSRC connects students with volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Collectively, SUNY Oneonta students volunteer more than 50,000 hours every year in collaboration with nearly 100 different nonprofit agencies in Otsego County. SUNY Oneonta classes begin Wednesday.
