The makers of Advanced Warfare talk about the Call of Duty that could have been and the Call of Duty of the future.

MMGN reports that Sledgehammer Games has grown exponentially over the past few years, starting from a two-man-team to now 250+ staff members. Sledgehammer Games was founded by Glenn Schofield and Michael Condrey after they left Visceral Games shortly after the release of Dead Space.

In terms of the studio's early success, Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey said the following:

"We finished Dead Space, the original Dead Space. [Co-founder] Glenn [Schofield] and I were the first two developers; we created that one with Visceral. We had a great time with it and had a vision of trying to take what we’d learnt there with a commitment to excellence, quality and team culture, and the opportunity to do that in the scale of Call of Duty, with the support of Activision and 100 million fans out there, that was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up."

After this initial success, Condrey's team pitched the idea of a third-person version of Call of Duty to Activision. Activision President Bobby Kotick eventually said yes to the project and, with Condrey and Schofield's approval, bought Sledgehammer Games, making it a subsidiary studio.

"Imagine everything you love about, say, Uncharted in the Call of Duty fiction and wrapping and we thought that was going to be a big hit. You know, history changed the course of events with Call of Duty, and we had an opportunity to take this team of skilled developers and co-develop Modern Warfare 3."

After months of development on a third-person COD title, Activision President Bobby Kotick came to Condrey with an emergency -- a majority of Infinity Ward quit following a legal despute and the departures of the studio's co-founders, Jason West and Vince Vampella (who would go on to create Respawn Entertainment of Titanfall-fame). Sledgehammer Games was forced to abandon the six months of work spent on the third-person COD and assist the remnants of Infinity Ward with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This resulted in Sledgehammer Games' official debut being one of the fastest-selling games of all time. Now, Sledgehammer Games is ushering in the future, even if it wasn't the future it had originally planned.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will launch on Nov. 4 for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

You know why the third-person COD was cancelled? It needed sound effects like this:
