The female fighters of Skullgirls Encore are getting both a handheld and next-gen makeover.

Peter Bartholow, CEO of Lab Zero Games, has announced on the PlayStation Blog that Skullgirls Encore is making the jump to PlayStation 4 and PS Vita later this year. Many PlayStation 3 players might recognize Skullgirls Encore as being one of the free games you were able to download in the month of May for being a PlayStation Plus subscriber. The PS4 and Vita editions of Skullgirls Encore will include every downloadable content fighter, stage and story addition that was included with Lab Zero's previous Indiegogo campaign.

Bartholow mentions that the PS Vita version of Skullgirls Encore will be playable on the upcoming PlayStation TV, with the ability to support two player gameplay via DualShock 3 or DualShock 4, though we obviously prefer the newer peripheral. There is also a $5,000 tournament for Skullgirls Encore going on at Evo 2014 this weekend.

Unfortunately, there has yet to be any comment made as to whether or not Skullgirls Encore would be available via cross-buy. It would be a great incentive for owners all three PlayStation systems if they were able to download Skullgirls Encore for Vita and PS4 after downloading the PS3 version a few months ago. Expect these new editions of Skullgirls later this year.

As a bonus, here is a work-in-progress video of Skullgirls' newest fighter, Eliza:
