Former child star Shirley Temple, known for her brilliant smile, bright eyes and curly hair, has died. She was 85.

Temple, known as Shirley Temple Black personally after her marriage to Charles Black, passed away on Monday night (Feb. 10) at her San Francisco-area home. She was surrounded by both her family and her caregivers. Her agent confirmed the actress’ death to ABC News.

Temple was a major child star in the 1930s, with her key films being ‘Bright Eyes’ and ‘Curly Top.’ She was also known for her signature song ‘On the Good Ship Lollipop,’ which you can watch her sing here.

She was an early bloomer who started to dance at 2 and who was acting by 3. She earned her own mini Oscar in 1934, presented to her for her contributions. She even had a non-alcoholic drink named after her, comprised of ginger ale, grenadine and a maraschino cherry, one that remains popular to this day. Indeed, the actress was the epitome of what “adorbs” would have been back in the 1930s, as evidenced by the classic photo above.

While Temple was definitive and emblematic of an era, she stepped away from acting in later years and was active in politics, serving as the U.S. ambassador to both Ghana and Czechoslovakia.

Temple is survived by her three children, her granddaughter and two great-granddaughters.
