Shailene Woodley Talks Jennifer Lawrence Advice, Filming Sex Scenes + More With New York Mag

Shailene Woodley is making a name for herself as a strong, outspoken young actress who is creating her own rules in the game of Hollywood. Her recent interview with New York Magazine confirms what we’ve already begun to know — Shailene is dancing to the beat of her own drum, and she doesn’t care what anyone thinks about it.

The 22-year-old’s interview with the publication contains a lot of new information that helps flesh out who the star is and who she wishes to become. No one can deny that the young celeb is an interesting character, but that’s part of what makes her so admirable and lovable.

Here’s what we learned about Shailene…

“I write letters every day.” This tidbit isn’t too surprising if you’re a Shailene fan. It’s well known that she doesn’t own a cell phone — or a home! — and that she prefers to wander around under the radar during her time off. “My favorite thing in the world is writing a letter and sending it snail mail,” she shared.

“I was told to start dressing more ‘cosmopolitan’ for my ‘campaign.’” When the actress was given that advice once her career began to take off, she scoffed at the very idea. “I remember saying, ‘Are you telling me that if I dress a certain way, my chances are better for an Oscar? That makes me want to show up naked.’”

“I asked [Jennifer Lawrence for] advice.” Shailene emailed fellow actress J. Law when she was offered the role of Tris in ‘Divergent,’ wanting to know what the blockbuster star had to say about leading a huge franchise like the ‘Hunger Games.’ Jennifer told her to take the part, because the benefits of starring in a massively popular film far outweigh the downsides like loss of privacy.

“I admire Jennifer Lawrence, but she’s everyone’s favorite person to compare me to. Is it because we both have short hair and a vagina?” Shailene firmly stated that she doesn’t find it necessary to compare herself to other actresses. In fact, she feels it’s harmful and a direct cause of insecurity. “[Women] are constantly told that we need to compare ourselves to a girl in school, to our co-workers, to the images in a magazine,” she added. “How is the world going to advance if we’re always comparing ourselves to others?”

“I saw [‘The Fault in Our Stars’] last night, and it was nostalgic in a way.” The actress has labeled her latest movie as the last teenage movie of her career, citing that she feels she can no longer relate to teens enough to represent them in roles. “Last year, when I made ‘Fault,’” she said, “I could still empathize with adolescence. But I’m not a young adult anymore — I’m a woman.”

“It was so much fun. Everyone was freaked out because I’m nude, but in real life, when I have sex, I’m naked.” One of her upcoming movies, ‘White Bird,’ required her to film a few sex scenes. Not a problem, according to Shailene! She wanted to bring realism to the film. “I don’t have a bra on, and I don’t usually have panties on,” she says of her off-screen sex life. “So let’s make a real movie! Let’s bring truth to the scene!” Why not make the film as true to life as possible and film nude? You can't say that she isn't willing to commit to her roles, that's for sure!

It's great that Shailene is so outspoken in a line of business that can often be overpowering. She's proud of her uniqueness, as she should be.
