State Senator James Seward announced Wednesday that he has introduced legislation to designate baseball as New York’s official state sport. Senator Seward’s legislation was crafted after receiving an appeal from Anne Reis’ fourth grade class at Cooperstown Elementary School.

New York State has previously designated an official gemstone (garnet), fossil (sea scorpion), shell (bay scallop), bush (lilac), salt water fish (striped bass), and reptile (snapping turtle), to name a few. Senator Seward’s bill has been referred to the Senate Investigations and Government Operations Committee.
