April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and from Thursday April 12 to Monday April 16, New York State Police will conduct extra patrols to catch distracted drivers. The campaign called “Operation Hang Up” will have troopers in marked and unmarked vehicles aggressively ticketing drivers using handheld devices. 2,000 tickets were handed out during last year’s campaign. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,450 people were killed in distraction-related crashes in the U.S. in 2016.
