The Japanese gaming site 4Gamer has posted a ton of new screens from the Japan-exclusive 3DS game Final Fantasy Explorers, and these new screens show off a few characters that we've definitely seen before.

Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Squall from Final Fantasy VIII, Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII and more can all be spotted among the screens, as well as some new enemy and menu shots. According to Kotaku, these characters are not directly playable, but instead players can transform into them via special items and the game's "Trance" system (which sounds like it was taken straight out of FFIX).

It's nice to see characters from older Final Fantasy games get repeated turns in the spotlight, but it's hard to get excited for a game that's currently only coming out in Japan. We'd love to explore these dungeons and caves with friends, and we'd love to see how the transformations into the more iconic Final Fantasy characters will work, but without a set Western release date we're having a lot of trouble feeling the hype. Hopefully, Square Enix will change their minds soon and Final Fantasy Explorers will go on an expedition to the Western part of the world.

Love Final Fantasy? Then you'll love ERock's cover of "One-Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy 7.
