While Curse of Naxxramas was some great paid DLC, we're glad to hear from Blizzard that Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is getting its first big expansion.

In an interview with Polygon, Jason Chayes, the production director of Hearthstone, revealed that Blizzard is planning to do a formal expansion that has over 100 new cards. While the Curse of Naxxramas downloadable content was great, it sits nowhere near the level of quality and content we have come to expect from Blizzard's formal expansions to its core games. Blizzard intends to add more than triple the amount of new cards that the Naxxramas DLC did with this new expansion.

In terms of this new expansion, Chayes said the following:

I think we're going to mix it up a little bit with this next release, which will be our first expansion. It will have a lot more cards. We're talking about more than 100. We are going to have a central theme for how that will all fit together. That'll be the next thing coming up. One of the things that we spend a lot of time talking about is pacing. Not just the pacing of the game as it is, but pacing of the rollout of new content. We really want to make sure the pacing is great not just for seasoned Hearthstone players but for new players coming into the game too. We really want to pay attention to how that is for the entirety of the player base. Does that feel like the right amount of content? Is it too little? Is it too much? We feel like this is a good starting point.

Chayes mentioned that Blizzard's Hearthstone team is very small compared to its other games, so doing an expansion to Heroes of Warcraft might take longer than most of us realize. Blizzard's team intends to also flush out the single-player adventures of the game in a much more in-depth way that Naxxramas did.

Blizzard is likely to formally announce this upcoming expansion for Hearthstone at its BlizzCon 2014 event, which starts off on Nov. 7.

An expansion to Hearthstone means more friendly duels:
