Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced Wednesday that $33.7 million to expand the national stream gauge network is included in the omnibus appropriations bill set to pass Congress this week.

The funding is a $6 million increase to current funding, and is aimed at strengthening the stream gauge network in upstate New York which provides critical flood warnings during extreme weather.

The federal funding will be used to expand America’s stream gauge networks, such as those along the Susquehanna River Basin, the Mohawk River, Oswego River and Upper Hudson River Basin.

The gauges measure rainfall in areas at risk of flooding and are a key tool that provide data for emergency responders, local officials, and residents.
