Update:

Nintendo recently posted a trailer for Donkey Kong Country Returns on its Japanese YouTube page. Donkey Kong Country Returns will be replacing Punch-Out Wii in Europe as the Wii U's last-gen digital download on the Nintendo eShop starting Jan. 22. Since Nintendo launched a new trailer for a five-year-old game on its Japanese YouTube page, we have a feeling Donkey and Diddy Kong's reunion will be eventually downloadable outside of Europe on the Wii U's eShop.

Original Story:

Wii fans rejoice! The best games from the previous Nintendo console are now available as stand-alone downloads for the Wii U.

This new Wii initiative started as soon as the Nintendo Direct presentation ended, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 appearing on the Wii U's eShop. January 22nd will see the launch of Punch-Out Wii, and the week after that collectors and eBay merchants will take a serious hit as the Metroid Prime Trilogy will become downloadable as well.

Each game will start at the low low price of $9.99 for the first week, then increase to $19.99, where it will stay permanently. Nintendo has not yet revealed what other Wii games will follow (if any), or if the downloadable Wii game initiative will have the same drip-fed approach as the current Virtual Console lineup. With Wii games now becoming available to download, it stands to reason that Gamecube games won't be too far behind. Please Nintendo, we need to play Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.

Go and download Super Mario Galaxy 2 from the Wii U eShop right now, then wait patiently for more Wii games coming to the service in the following months. Here's a prediction: Xenoblade Chronicles will join the downloadable ranks in April when Xenoblade 3DS launches. We have our fingers crossed for that and The Last Story.
