They seem so common today.

But on this day in 1953 the very first major 3-D movie premiered at the Paramount Theater in New York City.  The film was Warner Brothers'  "House of Wax," starring Vincent Price and Phyllis Kirk.  The stars of the film all sat in the front row of the sold-out premiere.

It is interesting to note that, months before, another early 3-D movie, "Bwana Devil," aired in Los Angeles.  But because it did not have the  backing of a major movie studio the film went nowhere.  "Bwana Devil" starred a very young Robert Stack.

Phyllis Kirk grew up in Oneonta where she was known as Phyllis Kirkegaard.  Her family lived at 83 East Street and she attended Bugbee School.  Her father was a shift manager at Elmore Feed Company in Oneonta

Now it seems no movie roll-out is complete without a version made in 3-D.  Take a look at this clip from House of Wax featuring Oneonta's own "movie star" (and YES..that is a very young Charles Bronson as Price's deaf mute assistant!  He was billed as Charles Buchinski)
