The Central New York Region of the American Red Cross opened a shelter in Herkimer early Sunday evening for residents of the Mohawk Valley who were displaced from their homes by Friday’s severe flooding.

The shelter is at First United Methodist Church, 127 N. Prospect St., Herkimer. Earlier Sunday, the Central New York Region closed the shelter it had opened Friday at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica for residents of Oneida and Herkimer counties who had to evacuate their homes because of the flooding in those counties. That shelter was closed because residents no longer needed to stay there.

The Red Cross shelter at the Oneida Family YMCA, 701 Seneca St., Oneida, remains open for Oneida residents who were affected by the flooding.
